“The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.” (Isaiah 24:5)
Isaiah is speaking to us in the latter days. How have we broken the everlasting covenant? The everlasting covenant is the unbreakable, eternal covenant that God makes with those He calls to be children of Christ through their faith. It is also referred to as having one’s calling and election made sure. It involves interaction with heavenly beings. It is also referred to as the mysteries:
“To have the privilege of receiving the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, to have the heavens opened unto them, to commune with the general assembly and church of the Firstborn, and to enjoy the communion and presence of God the Father, and Jesus the mediator of the new covenant.” (D&C 107:19)
We now commonly believe that the everlasting covenant refers to being sealed in the temple, that the only requirement is temple worthiness, and that an ordinance performed by man constitutes the everlasting covenant. That appears to be how we’ve broken the everlasting covenant. We stand condemned.
